First developed in the 1990’s, the Groodle is a cross-breed of the Poodle and Golden Retriever. Breeders were keen to pair the placid and good-natured temperament of the Golden Retriever with the highly intelligent Poodle. What they produced was the perfect family pet and companion with ‘hybrid vigour’, meaning the new breed is healthier than its parent breeds. They proved to make great guide dogs, assistance dogs and therapy dogs.
The Groodle has become popular with people who suffer from allergies as they shed very little due to their poodle heritage.
The Goodle’s appearance can vary from puppy to puppy however, most are medium sized with a curly coat. They have floppy ears with a long nose and a feathered tail.
A relatively new breed, the Groodle’s coat can come in a variety of sizes, colours and coat types. Their coats include curly, wavy and straight, depending on the parent dogs’ dominant genes.
With a rich history in hunting in both breeds, the Groodle is intelligent, independent, loyal and tolerant. They are easy to train, care-free and playful.
Groodles are energetic, human-oriented dogs and love being a part of the family. They do require constant care and attention but make great companions. They love long walks and love to swim.
Generally, Groodles are a healthy breed of dog. However, it is common for the Groodle to develop skin allergies leading to hair loss and rashes.
They only are also prone to Canine Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, Epilepsy and Von Willebrand’s disease.
Groodles are relatively low-maintenance dogs that require only general grooming and clipping. However, they are high energy and do need regular exercise to keep them healthy.
