History
The Greeks had documented Beagles-like dogs as far back as 400 B.C and the breed had reached England as early as Roman times. Beagles gained popularity in England around the 1300s and were known as ‘Pocket Beagles’ that stood only 9 inches tall.
In the mid-1800s American breeders started to import them from England to improve the looks of their own dogs and were bred to increase their size for hunting fox. These are the Beagles we know today and were first registered with the American Kennel Club in 1884.
Beagle Appearance
Beagles are sturdy dogs with compact yet athletic frames. They have short, water-resistant coats that can come in a range of ‘hound’ colours, the most common being a black saddle, tan and white. They have square muzzles and a broad nose with long, droopy ears. The Beagle has a deep chest, straight back and long tail.
Personality
Beagles are playful, outgoing and loving dogs that need plenty of exercise. They are instinctively hound dogs and are inquisitive, determined and food focused. This unfortunately makes them wanderers by nature, so be sure your Beagle is microchipped and wearing identification tags.
If left alone and unexercised, Beagles can become destructive. Like every dog, the Beagle needs early socialisation as a puppy to ensure that they will get along with other dogs. Beagles love children and being a part of a family.
Beagle Health Care
Although not all Beagles will be affected, some can be prone to Intervertebral Disk Disease, Hip Dysplasia, Cherry Eye, Glaucoma, Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Distichiasis, Epilepsy, Hypothyroidism, Beagle Dwarfism, Chinese Beagle Syndrome (CBS) and Patellar Luxation.
Owners Responsibility
Beagles are prone to becoming overweight so ensure you watch their diet and try not to give them treats throughout the day. They have a smooth, dense double coat that is resistant to rain and needs to be groomed at least once a week.
Like most breeds, brush your Beagle’s teeth at least two or three times a week to remove tartar build-up and the bacteria. Make sure you check their ears for wax build-up fortnightly.
