Originating from Siamese cats that were carrying a mutant gene for long hair, the Balinese Cat was first noticed in the early 20th century. Originally, they were known as the Longhaired Siamese, but Siamese breeders protested this name. Eventually the name ‘Balinese’ was decided, due to their resemblance to Balinese temple dancers.
The breed was recognised in America in 1961 but it was not until the mid 1970’s that the Balinese cat was imported into Europe.
The Balinese is a medium size cat with a long triangle head and large triangular, wide set ears. It is a slender and fine boned breed that have bright blue, oriental shaped eyes.
The Balinese has darker colours on the extremities such as tail, ears and face providing an elegant appearance. They have a medium length coat that is soft and silky with no undercoat. Their legs are slim with small oval paws and a long, tapering tail.
The Balinese crave attention, are extremely loyal, playful and can be taught to ‘go fetch.’ The Balinese is an active, vocal cat that love to be part of a family and need constant company. Unfortunately, this makes them less than ideal for those who work full time or spend long hours out of the house.
The Balinese has no known genetic health problems making them a relatively maintenance free breed. They are capable of living a long and active life, however, it is advisable for them to have an annual vet visit to check their overall health.
This breed needs regular grooming to keep their coats in good condition. They also benefit from climbing posts and perches as they love jumping onto high furniture. A good diet will ensure that the Balinese will be an active and healthy companion.
