Top 10 Unique Cat Breeds

Posted on: Apr 11 2024

These are not your average feline friends. Our list of unique cats ranges from the distinctive and quirky, to some of the rarest breeds you’ll likely encounter. If you are looking for a cat that will turn heads, read our list of Top 10 Unique Cat Breeds.

Napoleon (Minuet)

Named after the historical figure Napoleon Bonaparte, the Napoleon cat or Minuet is a compact breed with petite legs. This cat is the result of breeding the munchkin with the Persian cat. With an affectionate and lively personality this cat loves to be with their human family.

Peterbald

With only a handful of breeders, the Peterbald is among the rarest cat breeds in the world. Originating in Russia, these cats can be either completely hairless or covered in “peach fuzz.” Known for their dog-like disposition, they love being part of the family and enjoy following their owners from room to room.

Norwegian Forest Cat

Originating from the frosty landscapes of Norway, the Norwegian Forest Cat, according to folklore, accompanied Vikings on seafaring expeditions. Their thick coats are well-suited for icy Scandinavian climates, adding to their appeal.

Savannah

The Savannah Cat comes from the African plains, resulting from the crossbreeding of a domestic cat with medium-sized serval, a native African feline. This breed is one of the tallest domestic cats and can weigh up to 14kgs. With cheetah-like markings, large ears and dark tear streaks, the Savannah cat is easily recognised.

LaPerm

Belonging to the Rex breed, LaPerm cats are known for their distinctive curly coat. These active cats can weigh up to 5kgs and come in both short and long-haired variations. Their outgoing and intelligent nature makes them an ideal choice for families and children, bringing energy to any household.

Lykoi

An intriguing looking breed, often likened to a werewolf, Lykoi cats are playful and affectionate pets. Although these cats can resemble the Sphynx cat or Devon Rex, they in fact share genetic roots with Domestic Shorthairs. Their unique coats stem from a genetic mutation, however, Lykoi cats are perfectly healthy.

Devon Rex

The Devon Rex is a mischievous and energetic breed also referred to as the “pixie cat.” Originating in England in the late 1950s, these sociable cats love being around their family, children and other pets. They have slender.

Scottish Fold

The Scottish Fold are a good natured and placid breed. They have distinctive folded ears and combined with their round faces and large, circular eyes, these cats have an owl-like charm.

The Dwelf

This social, affectionate and intelligent cat is a recent addition to cat breeds. The Dwelf has a unique blend of elf-like features and a dwarf stature attributed to the combination of Sphynx, Munchkin, and American Curl breeds. The breed is usually completely hairless, although they can sometimes have a covering of fine, downy hair.

Exotic Shorthair

The Exotic Shorthair is an easy going and affectionate breed, with similar facial features to the Persian. This medium-sized breed forms strong bonds with humans and also gets along well with other pets. These cats have minimal grooming requirements, making the Exotic Shorthairs an excellent choice for first-time owners.

Been taking our fur babies to the team at Karingal for 6 years now and always receive the best treatment. From the reception team, the vet nurses and vets, we always felt well cared for. They’ve always listened to our concerns thoroughly and never made us feel stupid when explaining things.I always appreciate their follow up calls to double check our pet has been feeling better and that there’s no more issues, I feel like they do genuinely care for my animals :)Also greatly appreciate the gap only claims for pet insurance, saves a lot of time and money!

We took both our greyhounds here after trying a few vets in the area and they are by far the best. So knowledgeable about the breed and so understanding and patient with their anxiety about going into the consulting rooms. It’s so nice to see your pets being taken such good care of, getting lots of pats and reassurance. Thank you so much!

I’ve seen multiple vets and nurses at this clinic since having my first puppy, and every single person has been fantastic. They really pay attention to your concerns and are really thorough with their examinations. I appreciate that they never rush me and take their time to explain things to me. As a first time puppy owner, it’s always great to have things explained in such detail. They are all so friendly and accommodating and I would have absolutely no trouble recommending this clinic to my friends or family.
