Popular Cat Series: Persian

Posted on: May 6 2023

History

There is strong evidence that this longhaired, short-muzzled breed was exported from Afghanistan and Iran to Europe in the 19th century. They became so well-liked that even Queen Victoria owned several Persian cats, leading to the popularity of the breed amongst upper-class British.

Persians found their way to the United States after World War II and became a widely loved breed in American households.

Appearance

This breed is a medium-to large sized cat with a sturdy body and short, thick legs which make it less prone to jumping. They have wide set ears and large eyes, with a round, flat face and short muzzle, creating a unique, exquisite appearance.

Persians have long, silky coats with an undercoat and a topcoat. They come in a wide range of colours and patterns including solid shades, silver and golden, smoke and shaded colours, tabby patterns, particolours and bicolours.

Personality

Known for being quiet, affectionate and easy-going, Persians love being around people yet they don’t mind being left alone for short periods of time. They enjoy lazing around indoors and can be found on a comfy chair or on a sunny window ledge. Although they make great family pets, they tend to dislike large families and multiple dogs.

Health Care

Persians can be prone to several health conditions such as;

  • Difficulty breathing caused by short muzzle
  • Dental malocclusions
  • Excessive tearing
  • Eye conditions such as cherry eye
  • Overheating due to their thick coat
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • Predisposition to ringworm
  • Seborrhea oleosa.

Ensure your Persian has regular health checks with your vet to reduce the risk of these health issues.

Owners Responsibility

Persian cats need daily grooming with a wide-toothed metal comb and brush to prevent matted coats and remove excess fur. Regular baths, nail trimming and ear checks are important and washing their faces daily is a good idea as they are prone to tearing.

Ensure you pay attention to their diet, as this breed are heavily built, and may become overweight if allowed to eat too much.

Been taking our fur babies to the team at Karingal for 6 years now and always receive the best treatment. From the reception team, the vet nurses and vets, we always felt well cared for. They’ve always listened to our concerns thoroughly and never made us feel stupid when explaining things.I always appreciate their follow up calls to double check our pet has been feeling better and that there’s no more issues, I feel like they do genuinely care for my animals :)Also greatly appreciate the gap only claims for pet insurance, saves a lot of time and money!

We took both our greyhounds here after trying a few vets in the area and they are by far the best. So knowledgeable about the breed and so understanding and patient with their anxiety about going into the consulting rooms. It’s so nice to see your pets being taken such good care of, getting lots of pats and reassurance. Thank you so much!

I’ve seen multiple vets and nurses at this clinic since having my first puppy, and every single person has been fantastic. They really pay attention to your concerns and are really thorough with their examinations. I appreciate that they never rush me and take their time to explain things to me. As a first time puppy owner, it’s always great to have things explained in such detail. They are all so friendly and accommodating and I would have absolutely no trouble recommending this clinic to my friends or family.
